How does botox help TMJ?
Botox temporarily relaxes your powerful, chewing muscles called the masseters. This is helpful if you suffer from jaw pain and clenching. You likely also grind or clench your teeth at night.
Your dentist will recommend a night guard to protect your teeth, but this will not lessen the tension. Frequently, this jaw clenching results in jaw “popping” and headaches.
In one, 30 minute appointment, botox
is injected into your masseter muscles to relax jaw tension. Some people feel immediate relief while others feel their muscles gradually relax over the next two weeks.
Symptoms relief can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months. On average, most people return for another treatment at the six month mark.
By relaxing the masseter muscles with repeated treatments, you can see the muscles shrink. This results in a jaw-slimming effect.
Side effect: Since your powerful chewing muscles are weakened, it may take you a few more moments to chew tough food items such as steak. Most people notice this, but are undisturbed by this.
Timing:
Relief starts in under two weeks and can last for up to six months.
